Rajya Sabha Elections 2026: Action on MLAs Who Did Cross Voting as NDA Secures Massive Wins
The 2026 Rajya Sabha elections didn’t just follow the usual script they came with a twist. Cross-voting by MLAs in several states ended up reshaping the final outcome, giving the BJP-led NDA an edge where it wasn’t fully expected.
In states like Bihar, Haryana and Odisha, the numbers on paper told one story, but what happened inside the voting booths told another. A section of MLAs chose to vote across party lines, and that shift proved enough to push NDA candidates to victory in multiple seats.
For the opposition, the fallout has been immediate. The Indian National Congress has started cracking down on its own ranks. Several MLAs suspected of cross-voting have been served notices, and party insiders say suspensions could follow soon. The message is clear indiscipline won’t be ignored.
A similar situation has played out in Odisha. The Biju Janata Dal, led by Naveen Patnaik, has taken a tough stand after allegations that some of its MLAs didn’t stick to the party line. Six legislators have already been suspended, and sources suggest they may also be shown the door from the party altogether.
Cross-voting isn’t unheard of in Rajya Sabha elections, largely because of the nature of the voting system. But what stands out this time is how decisive it turned out to be. In closely contested states, even a handful of votes shifting sides can change the entire result and that’s exactly what seems to have happened.
For the NDA, it’s a clear political gain, strengthening its numbers in the Upper House. For the opposition, though, this episode has raised uncomfortable questions about internal unity and control over legislators questions that may not go away anytime soon.
