India Census 2026 to Begin from April 1 in Two Phases; Country’s First Fully Digital Population Count

India is preparing for its next population census, which will be conducted in two phases starting in 2026. According to the Government of India, the first phase of the census will begin on April 1, 2026, and continue until September 30, 2026. The second phase of the nationwide exercise will start in February 2027. This upcoming census is expected to be historic because it will be India’s first fully digital census, marking a big step towards modern data collection.

Two Phases of the Census Process
The census will be carried out in two separate stages to ensure smooth data collection across the country. The first phase will focus on house listing and housing details, where officials will gather information about homes, buildings, and basic facilities available to households. In the second phase, starting in February 2027, enumerators will collect detailed information about individuals, including population data and demographic details.

India’s First Fully Digital Census
One of the most important changes in this census is the use of digital technology. Instead of relying only on paper forms, enumerators will use mobile devices and digital applications to record information. People may also get the option to fill in their details online through self-enumeration, which could make the process faster and more convenient.

Why the Census Matters
The census plays a crucial role in planning government policies. Data collected during the exercise helps the Government of India understand population trends, allocate resources, and design welfare schemes for different regions of the country.

Closure
With the census scheduled in two phases from 2026 to 2027, India is set to witness a major administrative exercise. The move towards a fully digital census is expected to improve accuracy and make the data collection process more efficient for the future.
