Assam Election: Pradyut Bordoloi Quits Congress After 51 Years, Joins BJP; Alleges ‘Humiliation’ Over Shashi Tharoor Support

In a major political development ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi has resigned from the Congress party after a long association of over five decades and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Bordoloi formally joined the BJP in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, signaling a significant shift in the state’s political landscape. His departure is seen as a setback for the Congress in Assam at a crucial time.

Speaking after joining the BJP, Bordoloi expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Congress leadership. He alleged that he was “humiliated” and felt “suffocated” within the party. According to him, his support for senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor led to internal differences and eventual marginalization.

“I felt humiliated and suffocated. There was no space to express my views,” Bordoloi said, indicating deep-rooted issues within the party’s internal functioning.

His move comes at a time when political equations in Assam are rapidly changing ahead of the elections. Analysts believe that such high-profile defections could influence voter sentiment and party strategies in the coming months.
