The Numbers Tell a Serious Story
The issue of missing women and girls in India is not just emotional it is backed by hard government data. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), over 13 lakh women and girls were reported missing between 2019 and 2021. Out of these, more than 10 lakh were adult women and over 2.5 lakh were minor girls. These are not small figures. They reflect a nationwide pattern that cannot be ignored.
Certain states consistently report higher numbers. States like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal often appear at the top in missing women records. High population is one reason, but experts believe deeper social and economic issues also contribute.
Why Are So Many Women Going Missing?
The reasons are complex. In many cases, domestic violence, forced marriage, family disputes, or strict social control push women to leave home. Some disappearances are linked to human trafficking, where vulnerable women are lured with promises of jobs or marriage. Poverty and lack of education make exploitation easier.
Urban migration has also increased risk. Women moving to cities for work or education sometimes lack safe housing, verified employment, or strong support systems. In such situations, they can become victims of fraud, abuse, or crime. Mental health struggles and social isolation may also play a role.
Beyond Law and Order
While police trace many cases, the problem goes beyond policing. It reflects gender inequality, economic pressure, and safety gaps in society. Missing women in India is not just a crime statistic it is a social warning sign.
If India wants real change, the focus must be on prevention, awareness, and stronger community support. Protecting women’s safety is not optional; it is fundamental to building a secure and equal society.
