Will the Two NCP Factions Unite After Sunetra Pawar Becomes DCM? Maharashtra Politics at a Crossroads

Maharashtra politics is once again at a turning point. With Sunetra Pawar taking over as Deputy Chief Minister, the political conversation has shifted from power equations to one emotional and strategic question can the two rival NCP factions finally come together?

For months, the split between the Ajit Pawar-led NCP and the Sharad Pawar-led faction has kept party workers confused and voters divided. Sunetra Pawar’s rise is now being seen as a moment that could either heal old wounds or permanently seal the divide.

Many political observers believe her leadership could act as a soft bridge between the two sides. Unlike aggressive power politics, Sunetra Pawar represents stability, family legacy, and a calmer political tone—something both camps may find difficult to oppose openly.

If the Two NCPs Unite

If a reunion does happen, it could dramatically reshape Maharashtra’s political landscape. A united NCP would instantly regain its lost strength, especially in rural Maharashtra, cooperative bodies, and the Maratha-dominated regions where the party has deep roots.

For the government, this would mean greater stability and smoother decision-making. Internal rebellions would fade, and the opposition would find it harder to corner the ruling setup. Party workers, who are currently split in loyalty, would finally get clarity and direction.

Electorally, a reunited NCP could begin early groundwork for the 2029 elections, presenting itself as a strong, experienced alternative with a clear leadership line and a revived organisational network.

If the Reunion Fails

But politics rarely follows emotions alone. If the two factions remain apart, Maharashtra could see a long phase of political tension. Ajit Pawar’s group will continue consolidating power from within the government, while Sharad Pawar’s camp will push the narrative of ideology, experience, and moral authority.

This ongoing division is likely to cause vote splitting, especially in traditional NCP strongholds an outcome that could benefit rival parties more than either NCP faction.

For Sunetra Pawar, leading amid such uncertainty would not be easy. Governance would go hand in hand with managing political expectations, family pressures, and party dynamics.

What Lies Ahead

Whether Sunetra Pawar becomes the unifying face of NCP or the leader under whom the split becomes permanent will depend on decisions taken in the coming months. One thing is clear Maharashtra’s political future is being quietly rewritten right now.
