Why Supreme Court of India Questions NCERT Over Textbook Chapter on Judicial Corruption?

The Supreme Court of India recently expressed serious concern over a chapter in an NCERT textbook that discusses corruption in the judiciary. During the proceedings, the bench questioned whether the topic had been presented in a fair and balanced manner, especially since the material is meant for school students.

The judges observed that while discussions about accountability and institutional challenges are part of a healthy democracy, the way such issues are explained to young learners requires caution. They noted that the judiciary plays a crucial role in upholding the Constitution and protecting citizens’ rights. Any reference to corruption involving judges, the Court indicated, must be handled with proper context and clarity to avoid creating a sweeping or negative perception.

The bench reportedly asked NCERT to clarify the intention behind including the chapter and whether sufficient explanation was provided to ensure students understand the broader framework of the judicial system. The Court emphasized that academic freedom is important, but educational content should also maintain institutional balance and credibility.

The matter has triggered conversations in both academic and legal circles. Some experts believe that students should be aware of real-world issues to develop critical thinking skills. Others argue that complex and sensitive topics like judicial misconduct should be introduced carefully, particularly at the school level.

NCERT has not yet issued a detailed response. However, it is expected that the council may review the content following the Court’s observations. The development has once again brought attention to the ongoing debate between transparency in education and maintaining trust in democratic institutions.
