Soon after the announcement of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Election Commission has ordered the transfer of six senior officers in the state, including the Chief Secretary (CS) and the Director General of Police (DGP).
The move is seen as part of the Commission’s efforts to ensure free and fair elections by maintaining administrative neutrality during the poll process. Such transfers are not uncommon ahead of major elections, especially in politically sensitive states like West Bengal.
However, the decision has triggered a sharp political reaction. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly criticized the move, questioning the timing and intent behind the transfers.
Reacting to the development, she said that no matter how many officers are changed, it will not affect the outcome of the elections. She expressed confidence that her party will return to power, asserting that the people of the state will once again support her government.
The transfers have intensified the political atmosphere in the state, with both the ruling party and the opposition gearing up for a high-stakes electoral battle. As the election season begins, administrative changes and political reactions are expected to play a key role in shaping the narrative in West Bengal.
