Election Commission to Launch Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in 22 States from April 2026

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that it will launch a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 22 states and Union Territories starting in April. While officially described as a routine administrative exercise, the scale and timing of the revision have drawn political attention across the country.

The Special Intensive Revision is not a minor update. It is a ground-level verification drive where Booth Level Officers (BLOs) conduct door-to-door checks to verify voter details, remove duplicate or ineligible entries, and register new eligible voters. The goal is to ensure that electoral rolls remain accurate and up to date.

States such as Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Assam, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar are among those included in the upcoming phase. Together, these states represent a significant political landscape, with several expected to witness crucial electoral battles in the coming years.

The Election Commission has maintained that the exercise is purely aimed at strengthening the integrity of the electoral system. In a country with high internal migration and a constantly shifting population base, periodic intensive revision becomes necessary to prevent outdated or incorrect data from affecting elections.

However, large-scale voter roll revisions often carry political implications. Changes in voter lists can influence local electoral dynamics, especially in closely contested constituencies. While the Commission insists that the process is transparent and rule-based, political parties are expected to closely monitor the implementation on the ground.

India, as the world’s largest democracy, depends heavily on the credibility of its voter database. The upcoming SIR exercise will not only test administrative preparedness but also shape the political narrative in multiple states ahead of future elections.
