Assam Elections 2026: BJP Faces Internal Revolt as Leaders Threaten Independent Contest

As the last date for filing nominations in the Assam elections ended today, internal tensions within the Bharatiya Janata Party have come out in the open. What was expected to be a routine political process has now turned into a challenge for the party, as several leaders expressed anger over not getting tickets.

Many BJP leaders who were hoping to contest the elections were left disappointed after the final candidate list was announced. Some of them didn’t hold back and clearly warned the party that they are ready to contest as independent candidates. This kind of rebellion at the ground level can create problems for the party, especially in closely contested seats where even a small vote split can change the result.

The situation became more serious when senior leader Jayanta Mallabaruah decided to leave the party and join the Indian National Congress. His move reportedly came after he was denied a ticket. Since he has been part of the Assam government earlier, his exit is being seen as a setback for BJP at a crucial time.

Now, the responsibility to handle this situation has fallen on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the state BJP leadership. Both are actively trying to calm down the angry leaders and bring them back on board. Meetings, phone calls, and personal outreach are being used to convince them not to rebel.

For BJP, the main concern right now is unity. If too many leaders decide to contest independently, it could divide votes and indirectly help the opposition. With elections getting closer, it will be important to see how quickly the party manages to control the damage. The coming days will decide whether BJP can keep its leaders together or face internal challenges during the polls.
