Online Gaming Act 2025: 300+ Illegal Betting Websites Blocked, Up to 3 Years Jail & ₹1 Crore Fine
In a decisive step to tackle the rising issue of online gambling, the Government has blocked over 300 illegal betting and gambling websites under the newly introduced Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025. This move is being seen as a serious effort to clean up the online gaming space and protect people from falling into unsafe and unregulated platforms.
Over the past few years, online betting sites have grown rapidly, attracting users with easy money and flashy promotions. However, many of these platforms operate without any legal approval, putting users at risk of fraud, financial loss, and misuse of personal data. Officials say the blocked websites were involved in such illegal activities and had been under watch for some time.
The new law clearly separates legal online gaming from illegal gambling. Genuine, skill-based gaming platforms can still function, but only if they follow proper rules and obtain necessary approvals. On the other hand, any kind of unauthorized betting or gambling activity has now been strictly banned.
What stands out is the strict punishment under this law. Anyone found running, promoting, or even supporting such illegal platforms could face up to three years in jail or a fine that can go up to ₹1 crore, or both. This shows the government’s intent to send a strong warning.
Experts believe this step will bring more trust and safety into the digital gaming world. Meanwhile, users are advised to stay careful and avoid unknown or suspicious websites. The government has also indicated that this is just the beginning, and more such actions can be expected in the coming months.
