LPG Crisis in India: Government Makes E-KYC Mandatory for Domestic Gas Consumers
Amid concerns over LPG supply disruptions in parts of the country, the Government of India has announced that electronic Know Your Customer (E-KYC) verification will now be mandatory for all domestic LPG consumers.
Officials say the decision is mainly aimed at making sure that LPG cylinders reach the right households, especially at a time when supply issues are being reported. By making E-KYC mandatory, the government wants to remove duplicate or inactive connections and ensure that subsidies are not misused.
According to government sources, consumers who fail to complete their E-KYC process may face interruptions in their LPG supply. Oil marketing companies have already begun notifying customers through SMS and online platforms, urging them to complete the verification process at the earliest.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions among the public. While some consumers have welcomed the move as a step toward transparency, others have raised concerns about accessibility, particularly in rural areas where digital awareness and internet connectivity remain limited.
Experts believe that while the policy may improve efficiency in the long term, its success will depend on smooth implementation and public cooperation. The government has assured that support systems will be strengthened to help consumers complete the E-KYC process without inconvenience.
